The Quaddies are a race of genetically engineered humans that were created using Uterine Replicator technology, shortly after its invention, over 200 years ago. They are classified as Homo Quadrimanus.

The race was designed and created by Doctors Cay and Minchenko working for GalacTech. That company had decided to fund the project to create the perfect zero-G construction worker.

The Quaddies have had major metabolic changes made to them that greatly decrease zero-G muscle deterioration, eliminates bone deterioration completely, make them almost four times more radiation resistant and have completely eliminated motion sickness. The most striking feature though, is that they have a second pair of arms in place of a pair of legs. The first 1000 Quaddies were created at Cay Habitat which orbited the planet Rodeo, one wormhole jump from Orient IV. These youngsters were trained in zero-G construction methods and a contract was secured for the construction of Kline Station.

The Quaddies were held in isolation on Cay Habitat, virtual prisoners of GalacTech, which considered them nothing more than company property. This became abundantly clear when the invention of Artificial Gravity resulted in the cancellation of the Kline Station contract following which GalacTech ordered the termination of the Quaddies project, including the termination of the Quaddies.

Helped by an engineer named Leo Graf, the Quaddies obtained control of Cay Habitat by a subterfuge and then stole a cargo jumpship from the transfer station. Using their construction skills they merged the habitat and jumpship and managed to escape into the Orient IV system only moments before their pursuers opened fire on them. The Quaddies now live in an asteroid field near the edge of explored space and have very little contact with the rest of human civilisation.
