Ges Vorrutyer is most notably remembered as a close friend and comrade of Prince Serg.

Before taking this role though, he had had an affair with Aral Vorkosigan shortly after the suicide of Aral’s first wife. The end of the relationship left Vorrutyer with a burning hatred of Aral.

Wormholes are the method by which humans have managed to explore and colonise space.

They are naturally occurring 5-space anomalies. Many wormholes are connected to a counter-part. When an appropriate energy field is generated in a wormhole, the ship generating it is, to all external appearances, instantly transported to the counter-part wormhole. These energy fields are generated by necklin rods.

Sometimes abbreviated to ToI.

This represents the dark-ages in Barrayaran history.

Shortly after the planet was colonised the only existing wormhole collapsed and the planet was isolated from human space.

Over the following centuries the colonists devolved into a feudal society with middle-ages style technology and attitudes.

The Vor are the aristocratic/warrior class of Barrayar and their creation dates back to the Time of Isolation. The origin of the name and recognisable characteristics of its members, are the “Vor” prefixes to the Family name. The Vor class is guided by a very strict honour system and most of the serious crimes in Barrayan law, if committed by the Vor, are considered treason.

The race was designed and created by Doctors Cay and Minchenko working for GalacTech. That company had decided to fund the project to create the perfect zero-G construction worker.

The Necklin drive is the invention that allows spaceships to manipulate the space around wormholes to instantly transport the ship from one wormhole to its connected counterpart.

Necklin Rods are used to generate a 5-space energy field which triggers the wormhole to transport the ship. They are the primary component of a Necklin drive.
